Crankshaft Speed Sensor

This module introduces you to the inductive type crankshaft speed sensor commonly used on modern motor vehicles.

This type of sensor is used for:

         Engine rpm

Crankshaft position (for information on the position of the engines pistons

The crankshaft speed is calculated from the sensor's signal frequency. The output signal from the sensor is one of the most important quantities in electronic engine management. The vehicle will fail to start without a signal from this sensor.

Objective

On completion of this module you will have an understanding of principle of operation of the crankshaft speed sensor, the importance of the sensor's signal, the type of signal output by the sensor and methods of testing.
